What is the difference between Sinclair’s Petite, Regular and Tall patterns?

What is the difference between Sinclair’s Petite, Regular and Tall patterns?

Our patterns are drafted for three different heights – Petite, Regular and Tall. All three heights are included into all our patterns. Tutorials have all the information on how to choose a correct height for you. The recommendations may be different from pattern to pattern, make sure you check the recommendations for each garment you make. Here’s a height distribution:

PETITE 152-160 cm /5’1” – 5’3”
REG 162-170  cm / 5’4” – 5’6”
TALL 170-178 cm / 5’7″ – 5’9″

Generally we recommend to follow the height range to find out which of the options Petite, Regular or Tall you need to use. The main reason for that is the difficulty in taking vertical measurements precisely. The second reason that sometimes it is better to go with average to flatten a figure, especially for situations with longer torso or longer legs.

Difference between Petite, Regular and Tall patterns

The difference between three heights that we offer in our patterns is not only in length of the garment. Patterns are different in all vertical measurements including: Armhole depth, Front and Back waist measurements, Sleeve length, Hip depth, Crotch depth, Waist to knee length, Waist to floor measurement. Also other design elements might be different to maintain design proportions. For example, height of the cuffs, pockets, collars and other design elements.

Here’s a visual of the Bondi top Back part in three different heights. We made two examples to show the difference. We used the same pattern pieces, but aligned them differently for better visual representation. In the first picture the Back is aligned at the waistline and in the second picture the Back is aligned at the neckline. You can clearly see how the height affects the pattern.

Vertical measurements

However if you need more details you can find our basic measurements here. We go off Front Waist length measurement for tops – that is measured from the base of your neck, through the bust apex to the waist. For bottoms we use Crotch depth (from the waist to the crotch in the sitting position) and Waist to the floor measurement.

Make a note, that these are only body measurements, not the finished measurements of a garment made with Sinclair Patterns. Finished measurements may vary depending on design and ease.

Use these measurements only as a general guide.
